When carrying a baby with diminished muscle tone, particular attention must be paid to a good tying technique. The body of a baby with Down’s Syndrome needs intensive support for much longer than is otherwise required. On the other hand, the constant small physical balancing movements in the sling or wrap caused by the movement of the parent create a training effect that a baby in a pushchair would miss out on. Of course, in the case of a Down’s Syndrome baby there are no general recommendations on how a child should best be tied in the wrap.92 The factors that must be taken into account are too varied. Cooperation with the appropriate trained therapists, babywearing educators and doctors is essential.

Disabled children, and their parents, benefit from babywearing. On the one hand, it is one of the best chances to create an emotional relationship through closeness, and on the other parents need this emotional protection until they have found their inner stability.
